Who is Sal?
Sal Martinez has been Sal Martinez his whole life, but for about fifteen years half of Southeast Portland called him "Pixel." Not because he was good at video games, exactly — because he could stand in the doorway of his own arcade, glance across forty feet of blinking cabinets, and tell you which monitor had a single dead pixel in the corner of the screen. He was usually right. He was insufferable about it. Nobody minded.
He opened Galaxy Zone Arcade in 1978 with a loan, a lot of nerve, and exactly six cabinets. He is, as of this year, 74 years old, still owns every one of those cabinets (all sixteen of them, eventually), and has recently discovered that you can build a website by talking to a computer like it's a very patient, very fast employee. He is thrilled about this in the specific way that only a man who spent two decades wiring quarters into machines by hand can be thrilled by anything.
The timeline
- 1978 Sal opens Galaxy Zone Arcade on SE Foster Rd with six cabinets and a change machine that, for reasons no one ever solved, developed a taste for nickels and refused to give them back.
- 1982 The golden year. Sixteen cabinets, a line out the door on Friday nights, and Sal's own initials — "SPM" — sitting on half the high-score boards in the building. This is the year the regulars start calling him "Pixel," on account of the dead one he spotted clear across the room during a Saturday rush.
- 1984 The crash years begin. The home consoles get good, the crowds get thinner, and Sal starts hearing the word "downsizing" from other arcade owners. He swears, out loud, to nobody in particular, that he will never sell the machines. He means it.
- 1995 Closing day. Sal unscrews the marquee sign himself rather than let the landlord's crew do it, and moves all sixteen cabinets into a storage unit out in Gresham. Fifteen of them still ran. The sixteenth — a strange one that arrived broken back in '81 and never did work right, no matter what he tried — goes in under a tarp in the back corner, still broken, still unnamed on any high-score board anywhere.
- 2001–2024 The storage years. Sal drives out to Gresham once a month, dusts the marquees, checks for mice, and pays rent on a ten-by-twenty unit that his kids affectionately call "the world's most expensive nostalgia." He does not think it is a waste of money. He does not argue the point either.
- 2025 (age 73) Sal discovers "vibe coding" with Claude Code and rebuilds all fifteen of the working games as a website in a single afternoon, mostly by describing what he remembered out loud and watching the machines come back to life one at a time. Joystick the cat supervises the entire operation from the keyboard, contributing several accidental keystrokes and zero helpful suggestions.
- 2026 (age 74) The remodel. Sal does it again, properly this time. "Last year I hired a robot," he says. "This year I hired a crew of them, and this time we rewired the whole building." And then, on a rainy Tuesday in the middle of it all, a crate shows up at the door with his name on it. He signs for it. He does not say what's inside.
Sal's house rules
- No shaking the cabinets. They're older than some of you.
- High scores are earned, not bought. There's no bought here anyway.
- If the machine eats your quarter, that's between you and the machine.
- The cat stays.
- Ask before you touch the marquee lights. Actually, just don't touch the marquee lights.
